Embroidery stitch guides
Every stitch you need for a hand-stitched pet portrait, and a few more for the details. Each guide answers what the stitch is and when to use it, then walks you through it step by step.
New to embroidery? Start with back stitch and satin stitch. They’re the two stitches our dog portraits are built on.
Outlines
Stitches that draw a line: the outline of your dog, face lines, names and borders.
- Back stitchA solid, unbroken line for outlines, lettering and fine details.
- Running stitchThe simplest stitch, an even dashed line for light outlines and borders.
- Split stitchA fine, smooth line that looks like a tiny chain, and a crisp edge under satin.
- Stem stitchA smooth, slightly raised line with a gentle twist, lovely on curves.
- Chain stitchA bold line of linked loops, for collars, names and borders.
- Whipped back stitchBack stitch wrapped with a second thread, for a smooth, cord-like line.
- CouchingA thick thread laid on top and tacked down, for bold lines and cords.
Fills
Stitches that fill a shape, from a tiny satin-stitched eye to soft, shaded fur.
Texture and details
Whiskers, curls, tufts, flowers and finished edges.
- Straight stitchOne single stitch, for whiskers, lashes, fur strokes and tiny details.
