Custom pet portrait you make yourself
A custom pet portrait you make yourself is a hand-stitched picture of your dog, made from your own photo. A pattern maker turns the photo into dots to stitch, and you embroider it in black thread on linen. It costs a few evenings and some supplies, instead of a payment and a wait.
Making one vs buying one
Both are good choices. Buying a portrait means an artist does the work and you get a finished piece. Making one means you do the work and you get a piece you made. Here's how they compare, honestly.
A custom pet portrait: stitch it yourself or buy one
| Stitch it yourself | Buy a portrait | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A hand-embroidered portrait in a 6-inch hoop, black thread on oatmeal linen, made by you | A print, painting or drawing, made by an artist in their own style |
| What it costs | The course is $47, one payment. Add a hoop, linen, black floss, a needle and stick & stitch sheets, which are easy to find online or at craft stores. | The median price of the listings on the first page of Etsy results for 'custom pet portrait' was $27.26 (measured 1 Nov 2026). Those results mix prints, paintings and digital files, so real prices vary a lot. |
| Your time | A few evenings of short sittings, plus a practice piece and the finishing | Choosing an artist, sending a photo, and waiting |
| When it's in your hands | The day you finish it | When the artist finishes and it arrives |
| How personal it is | Your photo, your stitches, and you decide when it's done | Your photo, in someone else's hand and style |
| Good to know | One dog per photo, and it needs a reasonably bright, sharp photo | Many artists can paint two pets together, or a pet in full color |
If you need it tomorrow, want full color, or want two pets in one picture, buying is the better call. If you'd like to make something with your own hands and you have a few evenings, stitching it yourself is a lovely way to go.
How a stitched portrait comes together
- Pick the photo. Face toward the camera, both eyes sharp, soft light, one dog. See how to choose a photo.
- Make the pattern. Upload the photo and the pattern maker draws your dog and marks every stitch with a dot. It's ready in a few minutes.
- Print it on a stick & stitch sheet. A sticky sheet that dissolves in water. You stick it on the linen and stitch right through it. Here's how stick & stitch works.
- Stitch the lines. Back stitch from dot to dot: the outline first, then the face lines.
- Fill the eyes and nose. Small side-by-side satin stitches, with the little highlight left bare.
- Add the fur, then rinse. Short fur lines from root to tip, then soak the sheet away and only your stitches stay.

Personalized dog gifts you make yourself
A portrait of the dog is already personal. A few small touches make it theirs alone.
- The dog's name stitched under the portrait in small back stitch letters. Write it lightly with a water-soluble fabric pen first, or print it on a scrap of stick & stitch sheet and stitch through it.
- A date that matters: the day they came home, or a birthday.
- A mini ornament: the dog's face on a 3-inch hoop, simple lines only, for the tree or a rearview mirror. The course includes a lesson on it.
- A pair of hoops for a two-dog home. The pattern maker draws one dog per photo, so make one pattern per dog and hang them side by side.
- A note on the back in pencil: who made it, for whom, and when.
Keep lettering short. A name and a year fit neatly under a portrait in a 6-inch hoop. A full sentence starts to crowd the dog.
Is making it yourself right for you?
It's right for you if you'd enjoy a slow, calm project, even if you've never held an embroidery needle. You won't be drawing anything. If you can connect dots, you can stitch it, and you can practice both stitches first in the free 3D Stitch Simulator.
It's probably not right if the gift is due this week, or if what you're picturing is a full-color painting. For a closer look at paying someone to stitch it for you, see commissioning vs stitching it yourself.
Questions people ask
How much does a custom pet portrait cost?
It depends on what you buy. The median price of the listings on the first page of Etsy results for 'custom pet portrait' was $27.26 when we measured on 1 Nov 2026, and those results mix prints, paintings and digital files. Stitching one yourself costs the course plus simple supplies.
What's the most meaningful kind of pet portrait?
The one that looks like the dog to the person who loves them. A portrait you stitched yourself adds your time and your hands, which is why handmade ones tend to be kept.
What's the most personal gift for a dog owner?
Something made of their own dog. A portrait stitched from their photo, with the dog's name underneath, is about as personal as a gift gets.
Can I make a portrait of two pets together?
Not from one pattern yet. The pattern maker draws one dog per photo. Stitch one hoop per dog and hang them side by side.
Do I need to know how to embroider?
No. The pattern marks every stitch with a dot, and you only need back stitch and satin stitch. You can practice both in the free 3D simulator before you touch fabric.
