Stitch Your Dogby Make It Yours

Custom pet embroidery: commission one or stitch it yourself?

Commission a custom pet embroidery if you want a finished piece without the work, or a full-color thread painting. Stitch it yourself if you'd like to make it with your own hands: a pattern made from your dog's photo, two easy stitches and a few evenings. Both are good choices; they're different gifts.

What a custom pet embroidery costs

We measured one thing. On 1 Nov 2026, the median price of the listings on the first page of Etsy results for "custom pet embroidery" was $26.32. Those results mix finished hoops with embroidered clothing, patches and digital files, so treat it as a rough marker, not the price of a hand-stitched portrait. A hand-stitched hoop is priced by each artist, by size and detail, so ask for a quote.

Stitching it yourself costs the course, $47 in one payment with lifetime access and your pattern made from your photo, plus supplies: a 6-inch hoop, oatmeal linen, black floss, a needle and stick and stitch sheets. You'll have floss and linen left over for a second hoop.

How long each one takes

A commission depends on the artist's queue, the detail of the piece and the post. If it's a gift with a date, ask before you order.

Stitching your own is a few evenings of short sittings, not one marathon. You practice the two stitches first, then stitch the outline, then the eyes and nose, then the fur. Here's what you'd start from: a sample photo, the drawing our pattern maker makes from it, and the pattern with every stitch marked.

What stitching it yourself starts from: a photo becomes a drawing, then a pattern with every stitch marked, then your hoop. Bruno is one of our sample dogs: the photo is an AI-made image we use to test the pattern maker. The drawing, the pattern and the counts are its real output for that photo, and yours is made the same way from your own dog's photo. The time is a rough guide at a beginner’s 2.5 to 4 stitches a minute. See the real print sheet.

Which one is right for you?

  • Commission one if the date is close and your evenings are full, if you want color or a thread-painted look, or if you want two pets together in one piece.
  • Stitch it yourself if you'd love to make it, if you've never embroidered before (the course is made for exactly that), or if you want the story that comes with it: "I made this."
  • Either way, start with a good photo. Artists and our pattern maker both work best from a sharp, bright photo of one dog, face toward the camera. Here's how to choose one.

What our pattern maker can and can't do: it makes one dog per photo, it needs a reasonably bright, sharp photo, and very dark coats can come out as a solid blob. It doesn't do cats yet, but Stitch Your Cat is coming.

Questions people ask

How much does a custom pet embroidery cost?

It depends on the artist, the size and the detail. As one rough marker, the median price of the listings on the first page of Etsy results for custom pet embroidery was $26.32 on 1 Nov 2026, across a mix of product types.

How long does a commissioned pet embroidery take?

It depends on the artist's queue and the detail of the piece, plus shipping. If it's a gift with a date, ask the artist before you order.

Can I make my own custom pet embroidery?

Yes. With a pattern made from your dog's photo, every stitch is marked with a dot, so you don't draw anything. You learn back stitch and satin stitch, practice them, then stitch your dog.
